The Apollo 8 space vehicle is launched from Pad A, Launch Complex 39, Kennedy Space Center, at 7:51 a.m. (EST), Dec. 21, 1968. The crew of the Apollo 8 lunar orbit mission is astronauts Frank Borman, commander; James A. Lovell Jr., command module pilot; and William A. Anders, lunar module pilot. Apollo 8 was the first crewed Saturn V launch.

This is an image of Shackleton Crater, an impact crater that lies at the lunar South Pole. The image is engulfed in a sea of darkness, only a sliver of the crater’s rim is illuminated, forming a lit-up half circle. While peaks along the crater's rim are exposed to almost continual sunlight, the interior is perpetually in shadow. This image was captured by Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO).
